PLC Boarding Accomodation
Pymble Ladies College is a one-hundred-year-old girls’ school with over 2000 students ranging from kindergarten to year 12.
hardyhardy was approached to develop a modular furniture solution for PLC’s three boarding houses to improve student experience. We drew on the cultural history of the site and 100-year-old building heritage, coupled with the needs of the modern-day boarding student to bring the boarding house accommodation and student experience into the 21s century.
The design of the modular furniture solution was made quite complex by having to be able to be reformatted to accommodate over 100 room types, very few of which having similar formats due the nature of the boarding houses being built and modified at different times over the 100-year history of the school.
Beyond the system having to work at the basic level of working in the many, differently formatted spaces, it also had to help create the sense of a safe and warm environment for student wellbeing. hardyhardy conducted workshops with the students and took cues from other small space paradigms such as first-class flight cabin design to help develop an empathetic solution.
In addition to the industrial design aspect of developing the modular furniture solution, hardyhardy was asked to space plan the 115 rooms of the three boarding houses, manage the tender process, prototype all products and support the manufacture and installation process.
